In 1815, Andrew Jackson established his battle line against the British at the Rodrigues Canal down river from New Orleans (in present day Chalmette) at a spot where the swamp began only 1600 feet from the river. He established a second line of defense in the District Montreuil (in present day Bywater) in case his line at the Rodrigues Canal was broken.

During the development of the District Montreuil from his plantation, Robert Montreuil named two of the streets cut through his land for his daughters Désirée and Elmire. A muddled English translation of Désirée produced Desire, a street which today runs from the Mississippi river through the heart of Bywater almost to Lake Pontchartrain.
