Ab Jackson, a native New Orleanian and professor of
ceramics at Xavier University, opened his pottery studio and gallery in Bywater two years
ago, and admitted that he to was attracted because of the affordable space and that is was
"a good place to live and work." Many local residents were first introduced to his work at the Mirliton Festival, where he offered a collection of fine high fired vessels and hand built low vases, cups, teapots, etc. Not seen at the festival were his large steel sculptures. These impressive pieces can be viewed in his gallery. |

A glass blowing studio and showcase offering unique objects of art,
vases, unusual drinking glasses, etc. all very reasonably priced. Many residents await
their semi-annual sales to purchase gifts for the year. Opened on April Fool's Day in
1992, a date which New Orleans native and partner in the enterprise, Mitchell
Gaudet, somewhat deemed appropriate. Studio Inferno was founded by Scott Benefield, Bruce Benefield and Gaudet. Along with a glass blowing and cast production shop, the studio rents space to about 20 other artists and craftpersons working various mediums. Photographer John Lawrence and his wife Priscilla Lawrence (who created the beautiful and sought after hand painted floor cloths that were so popular at past Mirliton Festivals) are just two Bywater residents who are fortunate to rent the much sought after studio space in the facility, where rare vacancies are filled from a rather long waiting list. When asked why the partners chose Bywater for their venture, Gaudet said that they found properties here that were unlike any place else, affordable and offering plenty of space for studios and workshops. He also observed that more and more artists are discovering the area, attracted to the "real neighborhood feel of the place." |

When proprietors, Sallie Ann Glassman and Shane Norris opened their shop in 1995, they had already been residents of Bywater for several years having been originally attracted by the ethnic diversity of the neighborhood. A treasury of Haitian art that includes sequined flags and bottles as well as the spiritually inspired, and often intricate paintings by Ms. Glassman, can be found in this fascinating and friendly gallery that also serves as a fully appointed Botanica for her work as a practicing voodoo priestess. |
