Tree Planting Project

BYWATER TREE PLANTING PROJECT

In an effort to provide shade, cool our streets and homes, and a pleasant street experience, the BNA is working with the the Urban Tree Project of the Parkway Partners Program to provide street trees at no cost to responsible property owners and tenants.

How does it work? First, download the Tree Planting Agreement Form, fill it out and mail it to Daniel McElmurray, Bywater Neighborhood Association, PO Box 3191, New Orleans, LA 70177. Then Daniel will inspect the sidewalk in front of your property, any overhead utilities, and will determine the available planting area and appropriate size tree. This information is then added to a master tree plan, which will be submitted to the Department of Parks and Parkways on February 21 for approval as Phase One of the Bywater Tree Planting Project. We will be adding an additional Phases in each subsequent fall and spring over the next few years.

Trees that are currently available through the Urban Tree Project include: Savannah Holly, an evergreen good for winter color with bright red berries; the evergreen tree-form Yaupon Holly, which is also good for winter color and is well suited to placement under power lines; and, the deciduous Chinese Pistache, which provides interesting fall color, lots of shade, and has leaves similar to the pecan. We are working with the Urban Tree Project to include additional species, such as: East Palatka Holly, a small evergreen used throughout the CBD; Swamp Red Maple, a deciduous native tree for New Orleans; Parsley Hawthorne, a small tree with fall color, red berries, and pink-white flowers in spring; Silverbell, most famous for its bell-shaped spring flowers enjoyed by hummingbirds; Eastern Red Cedar, an evergreen which can grow almost anywhere and is much cleaner than the Bald Cypress; and Sweetbay Magnolia, with lemon-scented small white flowers and smaller leaves than the Southern Magnolia.
